“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
We are praying God’s blessings on all of you as we stand at the beginning of another year. Look out for the sparkling moments the Lord is bringing your way in 2009.
Financially 2008 was not an easy year for us – mainly due to the economic problems worldwide, but also due to our own financial decisions. As some of you are aware of, we have invested in a project with a Dutch company. It caused a lot of stress as the company did not keep to their promises. After a lot of negotiation and ‘threats’ we eventually got 2 monthly payments in 2008. For December and January we received no money so far. We now asked help from an attorney. We can only keep on praying and trusting God to do His will in our lives.
During 2008 we also became more established in our work in Cape Town. Jaco is now working on a more regular basis in the prison, and visit the prisoners about 3 times per week presenting courses on anger management and a programme on drug abuse, doing discipleship and individual counselling with the inmates. This work will expand this year, as the prison is also starting a rehabilitation programme for addicts. At the moment he is involved in training the workers.
Jaco will continue to work at the Dutch School on Friday afternoons, while Charmaine also started a job as a part time social worker at a centre for abused women. These part time jobs provide an additional income for us.
Charmaine will continue working with Hope House Counselling Centre and facilitating the Youth at Risk programme at the school in a disadvantaged community. The work is quite challenging as we spent a lot of time on disciplining and trying to keep order in the group. We were working with a group of 30 children with behavioural problems and learning difficulties 3 times per week. For this year we are planning to split the group into 3 smaller groups that meet once per week.
We recently visited with a church in Keetmanshoop, Namibia with our home group. Our Dutch friend Sjaak van Seters is one of the leaders in that church. We could spend some time praying with people and encourage them in their relationship with God. It was a very good experience also to bond as a home group and sees the work of God in our own lives as we are ministering to others
We hope to go to Europe from 20 June till 20 July to visit friends and family, and to enjoy a holiday in Switzerland and Northern Italy. We are looking forward to meet some of you in that period.
Our financial situation
God’s blessing on our work in the different settings, i.e. the prison, Hope House, the Dutch School and the centre for abused women.
