Jaco and Charmaine – June 2011

We are both looking forward to our upcoming visit to Europe in June and July, and a time to meet friends and family. God is using both of us in different ministries in Cape Town:

Jaco is continuing to work at Pollsmoor prison. He mainly works with prisoners in the pre-release section, and helps them to prepare for life outside the prison focusing on drug abuse. He also does Bible study with those awaiting trial in the Maximum Security section of the prison, as well as with the female offenders. It is exciting to see men and women opening up for God week after week. The women shed a lot of tears. They really miss their children. For more information about this prison work go to: www.hopepm.org

Charmaine is doing voluntary work at a Christian mission school twice a week. The children come from the surrounding farms and squatter camp. Most of the children come from dysfunctional families, and substance abuse and violence is common. Many of the children have learning disabilities and would find it difficult to fit into mainstream schooling. Substance abuse is rife, and some of the children were born with foetal alcohol syndrome. Charmaine does individual counselling and groupwork, and find it challenging at times, as there are some boys with serious behavioural problems. For more information about the school check out their website at: www.fbcschool.org.za

Charmaine is also working at getting a private practice in social work established, where she will offer counselling and training.

Financial situation

The financial situation is still a cause for frustration, especially for Jaco. He invested money some years ago in a company which basically was a scam. We only recovered a part of this money and unless a miracle happens we don’t get more. So far God has still provided financially, partly through Jaco’s part time job at the Dutch School in Cape Town where Jaco teaches children Dutch.
